Jar Off Hearts

Jar Of Hearts.

Camera
- this music video had close up on the faces. this was to see they facial emotion of the singer Christina Pirrie and the actors in the video.
- Christina Pirrie was the main focus point. she was always in the camera showing its her song and she's the one singing.
- when the key lyrics were sung, the camera would zoon in and do close up on the faces. again this is to show the emotion, but it is to be able to see what she is singing as well as hearing.
- the camera also fades in and out, also to create the sense of emotion.

Mise-en-scene
-there are many things happening in the background there are different elements in different parts of the vieo to capture different things.
     - mist:this is to show the weather the mist fades out the background making Christina stand out more.
    - raining: the rain gives the video emotion. rain is uncomfortable. makes everything wet and sad. rain gives the depressing sense.
   - dancers: the dancers are very aggressive and elegant. they dance in the mist. this shows more emotion more meaning behind the lyrics.

Editing.

- the editing in the video shows what is happening showing us what we could not see. you can see the soul is getting taken. there is no heart, however as the video goes on.
- the lighting changes. this helps to also show the emotion. at the beginning it is very dark but towards the end it gets lighter, showing she's getting her own back.
- the pictures slightly fade as it changes scene, this is to further the emotion but make it also act like a dream.

Lyrics/sound

- not all of the lyrics was interpretive,
- there was main
-

Ed Sheeran - Thinking Out Loud

camera

-throughout the filming it has many different angles of the two people dancing, they capture the movement within the dancing to show and represent the lyrics
-Ed Sheeran and the dancer are the main focus point within the video, Ed Sheeran song is a voice over however the movement of the two who dancers act out what is being said. This makes  the lyrics more dramatic and emotional.
- when a main sentence is said the movement of the dancers is slowed down this is so that the viewer concentrates on what is happening but then is also listening closely to the song.

Mise-en-scene.

-within this video there isn't much going on in the background the room they are dancing in is a very large almost royal room however the camera does glide past a large chair with candles,
-lighting, there are lights in the corner of the room, however these are aiming towards the dancers, this like aims the viewer to look at what is happening in the middle of the screen due to the way the lights are set up.

Editing.

-thereis not much editing within the actual video however they have cut it down and added different filming clips together to give the video more impact, this mainly happens when the two dancer have a big change in position or the movement is the top half of his body then another camera would be filming and they would edit it so it cut from one to the other.

Lyrics/sound

the lyrics to the song were  emotional, and meaning full

The One That Got Away

Camera
- there are many close ups within this music video of the faces showing the different emotions that are happening.
- there are slow frequent zooming in onto the main artist at it gives it more effect giving the viewer more time to read and see the emotion on someone face

- there are a lot of facial shots of the actors and artist but this is to see what they are saying and also to show and try and put across what they are feeling.

Mise-en-scene
- within this music video it start with the what is happening now and then it slowly fades to past memories, this is showing what had 'got away'.
- The present shots are all very white and plain showing that their is not much left after what has happened in the past
- In the past shots their are very full sets with things going on even though it is all very dark
(showing a dark past but empty present)

Editing
- there is a lot of fading out from one clip to the next, this gives it a more of a dramatic effect as it fades from one emotional face to the next
- there is also split screen so the viewer can see the full body shot and how they are acting as well as the face and emotion on the face this is for an intensity of the piece.

Lyrics/Sound
- Love story going bad
- Heartwarming

- Emotional

Purpose of music videos

The purpose of a music video is for many different reasons  such as showing talent or advertising many different types of products.

Music videos have many things that happen within a short time, they don't always satch the artist or how well they can sing they can be maily based on dancing advertising clothes the fashion side of music videos, or the locations they are filming, if the location is shown to be a nie area or the editing makes it look attractive then more people will visit they will want to go their however if thr location is shown to bea 'dump' then people wont be attracted to it, they wont visit and business will run out in it, people have to film carefully and show things do it doesn't offend people. Music video also always want to promote the song as much as they can, what goes within the video helps them promote this as it can make the song more appealing and catchy.
some videos can be very boring and cheap to make, however these can be very effective they are made and designed just to show how talented the artist is, they don't have dancing or different clips, they just concentrate on the artist to show the audience that they are very talented.

an example of a 'talented' artist is ed sheeran, his songs are mainly of him playing his guitar singing his own written songs, the purpose of his videos is to show his audience that you don't have to have a video to make it appealing, the emotion is within the artist, showing what he can do without going 'over the top.

Jason derulo 'talk dirty to me'. this video has purpose of promoting its song, there is lots of editing in the video, this advertising the company but also makes the video more appealing,,the artist dances a lot and has many females, this is the sex appeal, the purpose of this is to get more people (male) to watch the video, jason also wears many different outfits, the purpose of this is to advertise the fashion, show off what he is wearing many other people want to wear and buy it. also near the end of the video it has 3 type of bottles, this isn't anything to do with the dancing exploding of the music itself its their for advertising hoping people will see it and want it.

Hype Williams - Music Director.

Hype Williams

Harold "Hype" Williams (born 1970), previously known as HYPE, is an American music video  and film director.Williams first displayed his work by tagging local billboards, storefronts, and playgrounds using HYPE as his graffiti tag. "That's probably what stimulated my interests in colour," he says. "I wanted to be Basqiator Keith  Harring of the streets."

Williams has created a number of music videos for many artists. In 1998, he directed his first and so far his only feature film to date, Bely starring rappers NAS and DMX, the film released by artisan Entertainment. In 1999, Williams signed a two year overall deal withNew Line China to produce and direct feature films.Directed Aaliyah in her final music video, "Rock the Boat," which was completed several hours before her tragic death in a plane crash.

Nickname "Hype" comes from his hyperactive nature as a child. He is a director and writer, known for belly (1998), the game- documentary(2005) and  the will smith music video collection (1999).
A signature style used by Williams throughout the vast majority of his videos (shot mostly with cinematographer John Perez) was the Fisheye lens which distorted the camera view around the central focus. This was used by the tandem Williams/Perez in "Gimme some more" by busta Rhymes and "the rAIN 9SUPER DUPPY FLY)" by missy elliot; however, it was dropped by 2003, when he experienced his lowest level of production activity since the beginning of his career as a music video director.
ince 2003, Williams has adopted a signature style combining a center camera focus on the artist or actor's body from the torso upward and a solid color background with a soft different-color light being shown in the center of the background, so as to give a sense of illumination of the background by the foreground subject. This has been displayed in "Gold Digger" by Kanye West, "Digital Girl" (Remix) by Jamie Foxx and Beyonce's "Video Phone".

what his videos look like.

thorough out Hype Williams life he has produced many types of music videos, however he does have a theme to his work, while studying his work i have noticed that there are similarities within his work. the main thing i have noticed is that throughout is the set seems to be in a made to look like its a club, there are many people dancing with the main singers at the front doing there own  thing. the clips change between artists. there are many bright lights but also can be very dark due to the 'club' like atmosphere that has been set.

Technique analysis

shot 1

we have used the camera side on to the actors running we have then ran along side them with the camera until it gets to the end of the scene and we let actors run further on capturing what is happening

shot 2
we have filmed the actors full body zooming in on the skills showing what he is doing, allowing the player to get closer to the camera to show hes traveling at pace, we then zoomed out to see the player and the goal.

shot 3
we moved the camera from one player to another shoeing the 'team-work' then they com together and celebrate.

shot 4
we zoomed in the top half of the actor and then we zoomed out slowly as he walked towards us showing hes getting closer but still following him.

shot 5
we zoomed in on the actors face telling us his facial emotion and also what he is saying and it is very important.

shot 6
we zoomed in on the 'name tag' being handed over to the other person to show the story what is happening and what the scene before was, what he was saying.

WWW: WE followed the same storyline as the music video 'starting from the bottom'. even though we couldn't capture it in the right environment we felt we still copied it right

Advertising in music videos.

How has advertising been used in music videos?
advertising is being used in many different ways throughout music videos. over the years product placement has become more popular among artists, since music videos has moved on from only being shown on the television to being shown all around the world due to the internet. The overall paid product placement is shared with the artist of the song and also the label company. artist feel that product placement in their music videos will increase there income without making the video to boring and un-appealing to the audience so many people do watch it and see the products that are advertised.

 raybans
Lady Gaga telephone, throughout this music video there is a lot of product placement, many labels have been shown clearly throughout the video, labels such as 'virgin', 'beats' 'ray bans' 'coca-cola' and many more. this are shown to promote the brand making it more well known and showing if these famous 'artists'/'idols' are using these brands then they should as well.

50 Cent
50 cent also uses product placement in his song 'window shopper' however instead of slyly showing the brands his song is based around 'shopping'. he shows what hes wants to buy pauses it on what the products is, writes a caption next to it telling the viewers what it is, he also shows the price, 50 cent is clearly showing the product and what it is and how also much it costs.

Jason derulo
there is also product placement in jason derulo song "marry me" in this song he does designer labels of certain brands.

What impact has the idea of advertising had on Music Videos?
product placement and advertising in music videos has impacted many over advertising companies. MTV  was the dominant outlet for videos its policy prohibited blatant plugs in videos, so the network would often blur brand labels or ask for a new version without the placement. However Rio Caraeff, the chief executive of Vevo, the music video network started late last year in partnership with YouTube, said the company aimed to enable product placement in videos.

all the videos from product placement are from YouTube, this shows that YouTube doesn't blur out any of the brands that are shown,

however this is an example of MTV blurring out the labels that are being shown in the music videos as they don't want them to be shown.
